Kogi Taqueria, which opened April 2016 on Overland Avenue in the Palms neighborhood, is the first brick-and-mortar location for Roy Choi, who helped launch a food truck revolution in Los Angeles more than five years ago. With the success of his Kogi BBQ food trucks, the famous food vendor has taken root with a restaurant diner showcasing his modern Korean-Mexican food. Fans pack the small strip-mall eatery with a counter for ordering and a few communal high-top tables for tacos and burritos filled with chicken, spicy pork, carne asada, tofu and more, plus kimchi quesadillas and specialties like the Blue Moon Mulita. The Short Rib Tacos, the most popular dish, balances crisply griddled homemade corn tortillas, marinated and double-caramelized Korean short ribs, sesame-chilli salsa roja, Napa Romaine slaw tossed in a chilli-soy vinaigrette and cilantro, green onion and lime relish. Sprinkled with sesame seeds and sea salt, it’s an L.A. classic.
