Guelaguetza
This Oaxacan icon in Koreatown serves food every bit as authentic and delicious as its origin. Founded in 1994 by Oaxaca native Fernando Lopez, the boisterous, kid-friendly restaurant is famous for its mole sauces. Order a half portion of Botana Oaxaqueña - mixed appetizers smothered in onions, cactus and string cheese - and then finish with the Festival de Mole for a decadent experience. Expect to hear Mexican happy birthday songs at least three times per visit from the exuberant band! No wonder the restaurant’s name comes from the Mexican word for reciprocity: to give fully and to share selflessly.
Guelaguetza was recently honored by the James Beard Foundation, which awarded the family-run eatery with its "America's Classic" honorarium. Given to a "restaurant with timeless appeal, beloved in its region for quality food that reflects the character of its community."
