Kam Wah Cafe (金華冰廳)
Pineapple Bun

The most popular sweet bun in Hong Kong is almost certainly the pineapple bun. Despite its name, this delicious pastry don’t contain even a trace of pineapple. It’s a name it earned from the crunchy caramelized egg and sugar crown that gives it a distinctly pineapple-like appearance. The Kam Wah Café on Bute Street in Mong Kok is famous for its fresh pineapple bun, made and baked on-site and served with a slab of cold butter that melts before your eyes. It’s worth the wait, even if other items on the menu are disappointing. In particular, their “signature Hong Kong roasted milk tea” is weak and unimpressive. Still, if you want to experience the pineapple bun at its best, this is the place. It has a gorgeous golden brown top crust, and the bread is so soft, you could easily eat half a dozen.
