Café Litorial was started by a Macanese housewife who brought delicious cooking out of the home, defying stereotypes that woman should only stay home doing the cooking which gave rise to more Macaunese restaurants opening in Macau. There are two restaurants, the first in inner harbour and endearingly more charming than its newer sister restaurant in Old Taipa village. Their African chicken is one that shines here - combining hints of the trade routes during the Portuguese colonial days, thick rich peanut gravy with coconut bits and subtle curry - that reminds one of a cross between an African peanut soup and South East Asian curry with the use of coconut. The chicken is stewed and simmered in this deliciously rich gravy and cooked to a tender perfection served with white rice and olives on top.
