New Zealand whitebait, the silvery-white young of small freshwater fish, are a national delicacy. And in season, from mid-August through November, it’s the featured dish at Whitebait. While the delicacy is most commonly found in fritters, NZ’s best new national restaurant for 2015 showcases them in such creative dishes as a semolina noodle, whitebait, garlic and chilli salad. When whitebait are out of season, you will still find an array of high quality seafood dishes, as well as a few dishes for those not so Aquarian. Desserts are also worthy.
