Il Sorpasso

In the Prati neighborhood, right by the Vatican, Il Sorpasso is as cool as it is delicious. With shabby-chic decor, mix-and-match tables and chairs, it is understated without being pretentious. Its focus is on sourcing the best quality produce but keeping it simple. The dishes here rarely disappoint. The cheese board is a great way to start, or you can sit and sip some wine with some of the prosciutto and jamón iberico (Spanish-style cured ham). Hanging in the glass display at the entrance, it’s ready to be shaved and plated. Delicious starters like eggplant parmigiana with pesto, pasta dishes like strozzapreti (a short) pasta served with eggplant, pistachio and chili breadcrumbs and mains like prime cuts of steak are served at lunch and dinner. Open all day, Il Sorpasso is a great option for morning and afternoon tea, with a good selection of biscuits and baked sweets. In the evening, it's a popular hangout for aperitivo with people spilling out on to the street, cocktail in hand.
