Nonna Betta

Roman cuisine isn't all about amatriciana and carbonara. Its multicultural origins ensure the principles of Jewish-Roman cuisine are still honored. An institution in the Jewish Ghetto, Nonna Betta serves quality Roman kosher-style cuisine day in and day out. The popular restaurant, its walls frescoed with images depicting the area's fascinating history, is positioned in the heart of Main Street. Featuring all the Roman Jewish classics on the menu, you'll find the must-try Carciofi alla Giudia. These double-fried artichokes are outstanding, as are most of the fried starters. The kosher carbonara, which substitutes guanciale (pork jowl) with dried beef and semolina gnocchi baked in a terra cotta ramekin are also not be missed. The place gets ridiculously busy, so service can slip a little, but the food (especially their fried stuff) totally makes up for it.
