SEAFOOD
Cod and chips @ Catch 22
At the bottom of Park Street, you'll find Catch 22: a city centre fish and chip shop that opened in early April 2015. All of the fish is from sustainable sources, and I was pleased to see the traditional chippie sides of mushy peas, pickled eggs, bread and butter and curry sauce, among others, were all available – and the prices are very reasonable, especially given Catch 22’s central location.

SANDWICH
Pig Sandwich @ Mary Ann's Pig Stand
The San Antonio Pig Stand's signature sandwich, with tender sliced BBQ pork served on a bun plus relish and special sauce, has been on the menu since opening day. That's a whopping 94 years. Not only was this place the first drive-in, it pioneered several eats such as Texas toast, deep-fried onion rings, and the country-fried steak sandwich. Current owner Mary Ann had given over 40 years of service as a waitress and manager to the stand before it was closed in 2007. An approved court order meant that she could pick up the pieces and keep this culinary monument alive. Some things never go out of fashion.

BURGER
Cheeseburger @ White Manna Hackensack
White Manna is one of two burger joints opened by Louis Bridges in 1946 now under separate ownership. The Hackensack location was snapped up by Ronnie Cohen and his brother in 1986 and they have been churning out the definition of classic American sliders since. If you're lucky enough to grab a seat at the U-shaped bar surrounding the griddle, you can revel in the theatre that ensues: fresh balls of ground beef are covered with a handful of stringy sliced onions then flattened with a spatula. The patties are then flipped and topped with cheese and a light, airy bun that are allowed to melt, steam and form a burger that many say can't be beat.

SANDWICH
Sandwich Cubano @ Enriqueta's Sandwich Shop
The Cuban is a holy union of sweet ham, savory pork, melty Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard that makes a mere ham and cheese sandwich feel, well, a little embarrassed. The offering at Enriqueta’s is the real deal.

SEAFOOD
Clam Chowder @ Neptune's Net Restaurant
Neptune’s Net is a Malibu institution, loved by bikers and beachgoers alike. As with many of the beachside eateries here, seafood is the specialty. Try the famous Clam Chowder, which you can enjoy by the pint or half-pint. We recommend ordering it in the hefty sourdough bread bowl.

VEGETARIAN
Grilled Corn Mexican Style  @ Cafe Habana Malibu
Brought from New York to Malibu by Sean Meenan and Rande Gerber, this casual spot is the place to be for reasonably priced food and down-to-earth service. An absolute must-try is the famous cheese-covered grilled corn, on which the Malibu locals are hooked: a cob smothered by salty Cotija cheese, specked with cayenne pepper and finished with a smack of tangy lime. Take a seat in the temperate, tropical patio and enjoy.

Adelaide
PIZZA
Capricciosa pizza @ 360 Gradi
Pizza lovers must head to 360 Gradi. Owner Nick Vadagnini had been in Australia for about six years when he decided to open this pizza joint to provide Adelaide’s food scene with some much-needed Italian traditional pizzas. The pizza crust on these handmade delights are super thin, light and crispy; and the toppings are fresh, simple and flavorful. The capricciosa with tomato, mozzarella, ham, hot pepperoni, artichokes and mushrooms caps has a good balance of flavors. A bit of heat from the hot pepperoni and the artichokes and mushrooms cut through the salt perfectly with firm juicy bites. The sirio topping with tomato, mozzarella, capsicum, red onions, prosciutto and crudo di Parma is just as good. The pizza garlic bread is also a winner with a touch of olive oil and garlic. Simplicity at its best.

SANDWICH
Cheese Steak Ciabatta @ Roast
Tucked away at the top of Argyle Street, Roast is no ordinary coffee shop. The proof is in the first bite of this made-to-order creation. Served in a crusty ciabatta with melted mature Cheddar cheese and mayo atop a tender bavette steak, just add some peppers (not the chili kind) for the perfect, hot and savory sandwich.
