CHINESE
Smoked Tea Leaf Duck  @ Alvin Garden
This casual eatery in Burnaby is popular within the Chinese community. The Hunan hotspot is a 20-25 minute drive from downtown Vancouver, but easily accessible by public transit. The signature smoked tea leaf duck is worth the trip alone. They also have a smoked Hunan duck, which is good. And the cauliflower with Hunan chili and sliced pork belly (massive), and stir-fried lamb with cumin are other favorites. It helps if you can handle spicy. Sourness, chili heat and smokiness dominate Hunan cuisine’s flavor profile.

SALAD
House Special Sunomono  @ Tokyo Thyme
This is the "king" of sunomonos. It's a modern play on what is often a boring cucumber dish. This "sushi-like salad" is made with crab, prawn, smoked salmon, yamaimo, avocado and tomago wrapped in cucumber. It's unlike any sunomono in the city and refreshing in flavor and concept. The food is beautiful and delicious, ambiance unpretentious, and don't be surprised with the non-Japanese chef. He's a former apprentice at Tojo's (Vancouver's first fine dining Japanese restaurant).

BURGER
Burger Maison Frites  @ Au Comptoir
Au Comptoir’s philosophy: The best burgers are made with the finest ingredients. This classic French brasserie makes one of the few medium-rare burgers available in the city and possibly the favorite. It has a light potato bun, little fixings (greens, onion jam and melted raclette cheese) and the focus is on the soft and juicy house-ground patty, which is lightly seared. This masterpiece is accompanied by thick, golden, hand-cut fries. You can add foie gras, but it doesn't need it.

CHICKEN
Ají de Gallina @ Q'ero
This intimate restaurant serves some of the best Peruvian food in San Diego. As you step into the intimate dining room of Q'ero, the enticing aromas instantly transport you to the picanterias that line the quaint streets of Cusco. A must-try is the Ají de Gallina. Hand-torn chicken sits on a bed of roasted walnut and creamy golden Ají Amarillo sauce and paired with perfectly cooked Peruvian-style rice.

SEAFOOD
Wings of the Sea @ Wrench and Rodent
Hidden inside another restaurant (Bull Taco), Wrench and Rodent offers an unorthodox take on sushi. If you have the time, order omakase at the bar to let the chef's full creativity shine. If you only have time for a quick bite, make sure to get the Wings of the Sea. These lightly battered hamachi collars are shaped to resemble chicken wings.

SANDWICH
Reuben @ Diva Boutique Bakery Cafe and Deli
The Reuben here is massive, barely contained within two large slices of their house-made bread. Spanning the length of my knife and about half the height, this behemoth layers corned beef from Lordan’s with sauerkraut, gherkin, cheese and more. A magnificent Reuben, it’s worth the journey on its own. But it doesn't have to be on its own. Order a side of their sweet potato chips. Put them with the Reuben and you've hit the jackpot.

PIZZA
Pizza Napoletana @ Da Peppe Pizzeria Napoletana
Giuseppe Giordano, a pizza chef from Napoli, is renowned for his authentic Napoletana pizza At first glance, his dough is misleading. While it looks as thick as Napolitano pizza, one bite reveals a perfect fluffy texture. Together with juicy tomato sauce full of flavor and "meaty" mozzarella cheese, his pie is sheer simplicity. Giordano does pizza right. It’s the best in Tel Aviv.

BURGER
Big Mick Burger @ Bar Mick
Bar Mick, a local bar, pub and cafe run by the extremely friendly Dick and his partner, Marieke (hence the name Mick), is a great option for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a snack with a few beers. It’s pub food done well. Their "Big Mick" burger is considered one of the best in the city. Served with cheese and fries, the juicy burger patty is served with lots of veggies and cradled in a huge, crispy bun. Bar Mick has a large terrace on the side street with plenty of roomy tables, and a few benches along the Spaarndammerstraat -- the perfect place to hang out when the weather is nice. At night, the cozy cafe with soft green walls and tastefully hip décor is a great spot to play board games with friends.

INDIAN
Soto Ayam @ Restaurant Jun
The Netherlands’ colonial history has created a vibrant Indonesian and Surinamese cuisine scene, and Restaurant Jun has earned a reputation as one of the best Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam. Run by Edy Junaedy, the friendly owner and chef will make things as spicy or mild as you like. The menu changes every three months, but some classic dishes are standard. Order the iconic soto ayam to start. This deliciously fragrant chicken soup is flavored with turmeric, which gives it its characteristic yellow color. Then try a rijsttafel, a Dutch word that literally translates as "rice table.” This elaborate meal features lots of small, spicy dishes to share, all served with rice. Ask for extra chilli if you like your food spicy.
