El Gringo Viejo is a laid back paladar (privately owned restaurant) decorated with posters of Gregory Peck, the star of the eponymous movie. Best on its criollo menu are the baked lamb shanks, braised with tomatoes, peppers and cumin. They’re gigantic (good to share) and the meat is tender, succulent and falling off the bone. The garbanzo beans, flavoured with ham, tomato, green peppers and onion make a hearty appetizer. This is Cuban home cooking at its best.
