Chef Mak used to be a chef at the Michelin 3-star Cantonese restaurant in the Four Seasons hotel, Lung King Heen. Soon after leaving the hotel group, he opened a small dim sum restaurant with a low-cost menu. Within a year it had earned Michelin 1-star status leading to a reputation across the gastronomic world as “the world’s cheapest Michelin-star restaurant.” Mak now has branches in Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand. With high-quality dim sum on offer at an average price of less than $3 US, who’s going to care too much about its functional and unpretentious dining room or its basic but perfectly acceptable service?
