“Happiness ... I sell ... Happiness ...” This is not usually what you expect to hear women calling out on the streets. But in Cartagena and the surrounding region, it is common. Don’t be startled, it’s simply to announce the arrival of a delicious treat called Alegria (happiness). Palenqueras, as women from Palenque are called, with their colorful dresses, shout this phrase out as they walk down city streets to attract customers. They carefully balance a large platter on their heads that is filled with this typical dessert: cooked millet is roasted and bathed in dark panela (raw sugar syrup), toasted coconut and anise, then shaped into convenient balls. Different, typical and delicious.
