Joe’s Stone Crab

Hungarian immigrant Joe Weiss founded a small lunch counter at a bathing casino in 1913. In 1921 he was debating with a researcher if stone crabs could be eaten and threw a few in boiling water to find out. More than 100 years later, Joe’s Stone Crab is the highest grossing restaurant in the nation, and natives and tourists wait and dine alongside such celebrities as Muhammad Ali, Dan Marino and Jennifer Lopez as they dig into a pile of these jumbo crab claws. To enhance the sweet flavor of these colossal morsels, diners squeeze lemon or lime juice over the chilled meat, dip them into melted butter or use Joe's original recipe mustard sauce, a sharp, creamy concoction. Those in the know who arrive early order the “Collosals that sell out by 6pm and then finish with a tart wedge of Key Lime pie.
