The Sacher Hotel
The Original Sachertorte

Hotel Sacher, one of the world’s great luxury hotels, is also is the place to taste this landmark torte. Invented by Franz Sacher in 1832 at age 16 for a Viennese prince and perfected by his son, Eduard, at the famed Demel Bakery, the Sacher-Torte is considered the world's most famous chocolate cake. While the secret recipe is known only to Sacher Hotel bakers, dessert lovers have come to expect dense, moist chocolate cake stacked with thin layers of apricot jam, coated in dark chocolate icing on the top and sides, stamped with an official seal of bittersweet chocolate, and served with unsweetened whipped cream.
