Waldorf Astoria

Is this the most historic hotel in the world? Read the amazing story at Our Carpe Diem while we focus on the legendary Swiss Maitre D, Oscar Tschirky, who was a cornerstone of New York and indeed, American gastronomic history. After introducing European fine dining to the USA at Delmonico’s, Oscar moved on to the Waldorf Astoria, where he oversaw the creation/popularization of another string of historic dishes, including: Eggs Benedict, Waldorf Salad, 1000 Island dressing, Veal Oscar and Red Velvet Cake. You probably can’t afford the newly refurbished hotel rates, but you can bask in New York culinary lore in the gorgeous restaurant.
