The husband-wife chef team of Martin Swift and Linda Rodriguez opened THE SMASHED PIG on East Fremont Street a little more than two months ago. It was a hit with lovers of upgraded, English gastropub food (Martin’s homeland) from the get-go, but tragically, Linda suffered and stroke and died shortly before Christmas. The restaurant (and Swift) have gamely soldiered on since then -- with him at the stoves every day, putting out fabulous renditions of meat pies, fish and chips and the best dam sticky toffee pudding in Sin City. (Only Gordon Ramsay’s version at Gordon Ramsay Steak even comes close.) And in a downtown full of good burgers, his is one of the best. Order at the counter, get a good Limey ale, and by all means, get the steak and ale pie. One bite and you’ll feel like a Manchester United fan. Here’s to you, Linda.
