Café El Popular
Huevos Albañil

A classic Mexican breakfast at this former “Café de Chinos” (the Mexican version of the old-fashioned coffee shop) is a D.F. tradition. It has been in the hands of the same Chinese/Mexican family since 1948, although the menu no longer offers anything remotely Chinese. Huevos albañil (which roughly translates as “bricklayer’s eggs”) are scrambled then bathed in a spiky tomato sauce. The aromatic coffee is Veracruz style, i.e. rich coffee syrup and hot milk, served in a glass.
