Helados OVNI
Lucuma, a signature fruit of Peru, has a green skin and orange, yoke-like flesh, and is found along the lower slopes of the western side of the Andes. The flavor is somewhere between pumpkin and maple syrup, which makes it ideal for use in sweets, particularly ice cream and yogurt. It is so popular in Peru that it regularly outsells vanilla and chocolate. But the most famous lucuma ice cream is from a run-down UFO-themed stand on the side of the Pan-American Highway, about an hour south of Lima. Their all-natural lucuma ice cream is available with or without pecans. That’s it. You’ll see signs for the stand a few kilometers in each direction, as well as a few satellite stands during the summer.
