Russ & Daughters

In 1907, Joel Russ started his business from a pushcart to cater to the throngs of Jewish immigrants settling in the Lower East Side of New York. In 1914, he opened J. Russ International Appetizers (What is Appetizing?) - which would become the landmark Russ & Daughters - a foodie destination for high-end smoked fish, caviar and New York-style specialty foods. The go-to creation is the Super Heebster: whitefish, baked salmon salad with horseradish dill cream cheese and wasabi with flying fish roe layered on a bagel. It can get messy. But hey, who cares about messy when it comes to the essence of New York “schmeared” on heavy?
