Set on Aquidneck Island off the New England state of Rhode Island, Newport’s yacht-filled harbor hosted the America’s Cup, a renowned annual regatta, for many years. A legendary summer playground of the Gilded Age's rich and famous, it still attracts visitors with its gorgeous scenery, vibrant cultural scene (including a famous jazz and folk fest) and seaside charm. A diverse ethnic migration of Portuguese, Irish, Italians and French Canadians to the state lent a distinct influence on local cuisine. Look for calamari, lobster ravioli, frozen lemonade, doughboys, pizza strips, “stuffies” (breading stuffed with seafood) and zeppole.
