Amato's
In 1902, Giovanni Amato established a small sandwich cart near the docks, which later evolved into the famous Amato's sandwich shop on India Street. After working at the Portland shop for 70 years, an Italian immigrant named Dominic Reali bought the business in 1972. From a single location on India Street, Amato's has now grown to over 40 locations across New England, serving a variety of Italian cuisine, including sandwiches, pizza, and pasta. Interestingly, Amato's sandwiches were the inspiration behind the creation of the Subway franchise. Amato's sandwiches are also popular amongst the renowned Maine author, Stephen King.
