Chefs Warehouse & Canteen

This canteen, operating from the same spot that you can purchase cookery books, knives, and deli products, produces an incredibly fine selection of tapas that changes each day. With exquisite plating, and masterminded by chef Liam Thomlin (loved by the chefs in Cape Town) expect Pacific Rim and Eastern flavours to dominate and a seat very hard to find. Your best bet is just before lunch or around 7 pm – note they close at 8pm and no bookings are possible. You’ll likely share a bench with others and spaces are few, and rather cramped. The tapas board for two is a must, and if it includes the beetroot cured salmon with horseradish crème and a Vietnamese-style beef salad, you’re in for an absolute treat. Service can be terse and patrons are always hovering for your spot on the bench, but venture for the food here, and linger for wine elsewhere. Oh, and if you’re interesting in learning the basics of classical cookery, chef Thomlin is one of the best teachers in the city.
