Antxoas a la Jardinera

In operation for more than 100 years, celebrities such as actor Ian McEwan, Chef Ferran Adrià and football player Xabi Alonso are among the famous faces in the photos that line the walls at Txepetxa on Calle Pescaderia. Specializing in boquerones (white anchovies), the bar is loaded with 15 ornate ceramic replicas of its anchovy pintxos. Prepared to order, selections of the silvery fillets marinated (not salted) in a secret family recipe are arranged with sushi-type precision on a warm slices of baguette and topped with everything from spider crab, sea urchin roe and black olive pâté to red currants. Try the clean and crisp anchoas jardineras before branching out to the more exotic anchovies with tropical fruit.
