Bar do David
Empanados de Camarão

Not all of Rio’s favelas (slums) are the danger zones some people would have you believe. Nestled a steep 10-minute walk from the beaches of Leme (close to Copacabana) is Bar do David. The eponymous owner has created something simple and charming but with enough personality and inventiveness to make the journey worthwhile. Chief among his creations is the empanado de camarão: a golden, crispy shell surrounds light and fluffy cassava puree. And in the centre? A fat, juicy prawn bathing in a buttery, creamy sauce. A couple of drops of the house-made chilli sauce and you have the perfect appetizer.
