Where’s the beef? Essential Burger Joints in Stockholm

By burgerdudes on October 12th, 2016

Stockholm is abuzz with burgers.

For many years, it was hard to find a good hamburger in Sweden's waterfront capital. With very little exception, they were tasteless frozen patties topped with Thousand Island dressing. Blech! But then Flippin’ Burgers came along a few years ago and fans started waiting in long lines to get what everyone claimed was the best burger in town, “just like the ones in the U.S.”

Today, the burger craze has caught on with a vengeance. Dozens of patty palaces have sprung up in the city and more open all the time. Stockholm is now one of the best burger cities in Europe.

To help sort the good from the just OK, ExtremeFoodies asked the Burgerdudes, our hamburger experts in Stockholm, to recommend the best hamburger joints in the “Venice of the North.” Here are their picks:

Barrels Burgers & Beer

Barrels is relatively new on the high-quality burger scene in Stockholm, and they put a lot of effort and thought into their burgers. The eatery gained huge popularity after receiving an award for best newcomer restaurant in Stockholm last year.

Their menu is varied with interesting burgers, and if you have room for sides, we recommend you try their tasty haricots verts instead of fries. We’re really fond of their homage to early style burgers called “The Original,” which is a plain cheeseburger sandwiched between two slices of toast. It sounds almost deceptively simple, but trust us, it’s truly delicious.

Their location is shared with the microbrewery bar Tritonia, so a great beer selection is always at hand. The burgers are in a mid-price range with prices between 115 to 135 SEK.

Bun Meat Bun

Bun Meat Bun is probably best described as a Swedish version of the American burger chain Shake Shack. With two locations, one in the south suburbs of Farsta and one in the Söderhallarna food hall in the Södermalm district, they serve high-quality fast-casual burgers. Their burgers are in the low price range of 65-100 SEK, which is a great price for central Stockholm. But don’t let the price fool you. The smashed patties come from high-quality beef and go really well with their fluffy buns.

If you want something special, we recommend ordering the burger “extra fin” (extra fine) for a burger fried with mustard and with added onions. And if you’re really hungry, each additional 100-gram patty costs 25 SEK.

Burger Bistron

Burger Bistro have two restaurants, one in Märsta and one in Upplands Väsby. Both are at the end of the commuter line near Arlanda Airport. But thanks to their hype, they attract visitors from central Stockholm — and for good reason. They serve their juicy burgers in a high quality fluffy bun.

So yes, getting there can take a while, but the generous pricing from 95 SEK and their weekly special burger makes it well worth the trip. If you’re really hungry, you can add an extra patty for 39 SEK, and if you want to try something different, they also have a burger salad on their menu.

Flippin' Burgers

Flippin’ Burgers is the place that started the whole burger craze in Stockholm. Flippin' Burgers still holds up as the best burger joint in town, thanks to their tireless attention to detail and their imaginative “burger of the month” creations. They are very popular and the queues can sometimes be painfully long, so our tip is to arrive at their Odenplan restaurant 10 to 15 minutes before they open. They also have a great beer and wine selection in the bar, which makes any time spent waiting for a table much more tolerable. The price for a burger is around 100 SEK, and fries are an additional 35 SEK. But we really recommend you get the delicious cheese fries for 45 SEK with their own cheese from Väddö. If you really want to have the full Flippin’ experience, order one of their tasty milkshakes or floats.

Franky's

Franky's is a small burger shack centrally located next to Hard Rock Café near Odenplan plaza. It may be hard to believe at first glance, but this small kiosk serves one of the finest burgers in Stockholm. The passionate chef pays attention to everything that makes a great burger. The bun is warm and fluffy, the meat is juicy and the fries taste great.

Due to the small size of the establishment, queues can and will build up and it’s not unusual that they are sold out before the announced closing time. But you’ll forgive them once you try their burgers. To keep you up to date, we recommend visiting their Instagram account at @frankysburger for the latest news and updates.

Our favorite burger here is the double “Texas” burger that has a nearly perfect balance of sweet and meaty flavors. Their burgers have a mid-price range, and cost between 80 and 140 SEK.

Funky Chicken Food Truck

Funky Chicken Food Truck serves, without question, the best food truck burger in Stockholm. They won both the Jury’s Vote and the People’s Choice during Stockholm Burger Fest 2016 with their classic Triple Cheese ⎯ a burger with three slices of cheese and mayonnaise that almost melts in your mouth.

On weekdays, their food truck is usually parked for lunch in the southeastern suburb of Nacka. But on weekends, you can find them at Hornstulls Marknad in the Södermalm district, serving awesome burgers well worth a detour at tasty, food truck prices. The market is closed during the winter, so check their Instagram account @funkychickenfoodtruck for a current schedule.

Hearts

Hearts is part of Nordic C Hotel, next to Stockholm's Central Station and the Arlanda Express train. They serve a deconstructed burger of high quality, with a Blumenthal ground patty of brisket and tender chuck steak, cooked according to your taste.

Their fun campaign burgers make Hearts stand out in the burger jungle of Stockholm. They have had burgers with interesting ingredients like mac 'n' cheese, lobster and 'Nduja sausage. Please note they only serve their burgers during dinner hours.

The price for their burger with fries is 165 SEK, with additional options to add. Make a reservation to ensure a table.

Miss Behave Bar

Miss Behave Bar in Stockholm's Old Town district is a product of the almost mythical Garage Bar, located in Höganäs in the south of Sweden. After years of hype, they got hold of some prime real estate by the water, overlooking the picturesque Skeppsholmen, and decided to share their magic with the Swedish capital.

Blumenthal ground chuck patties and a great selection of beer from the microbrewery Höganäs Bryggeri make this burger joint a winner. We suggest trying either their “Animal Style” burger with mustard fried patties or one of the imaginative “Burger of the week” creations.

The price is on the higher mid-range, starting at 155 SEK and stretching up to 175 SEK. The joint is spacious and often has several tables free during lunch and dinner hours.

Phil's Burger

Phil's Burger is a chain with several locations in Stockholm, with a sleek Scandinavian interior design and marble details. They have a small, but good selection of burgers, and we recommend trying “Double Phil's” together with their crisp, double-fried fries if you visit them during lunch hours. Note that the menu changes somewhat during dinner hours and more burger varieties are available, most noticeable their “Crispy Truffle Burger.”

During lunch hours, it’s usually a bit crowded, so it’s a safer bet to visit them after 4 p.m. to avoid the worst queues. The price is mid-range and the burgers prices go from 100 SEK to 160 SEK.

Tweed

The luxurious burger from the cocktail bar Tweed in Old Town is simply amazing. It consists of 200 grams of charcoal-grilled perfection, combined with a brioche bun, pancetta, manchego cheese and truffle mayonnaise.

However, the deliciousness comes with a hefty price of 225 SEK, but it’s worth every krona. You need to try their splendid drinks as well, because this is one of the best cocktail bars in town. The seating — mainly consisting of lovely chesterfield chairs — is limited, so we’d recommend you make reservations well in advance to guarantee a table.

This is not an everyday burger, but if you’re visiting Stockholm and want to treat yourself, you can’t go wrong visiting Tweed.
